Order Fulfillment Productivity Enhancements through the use of Zone Routing Conveyor Control
04/20/2006
Conveyor based order routing is a great concept to reduce labor and improve picking for multi-line orders. This concept can support both pick to carton or tote provide an efficient means to route the work to the operator by deploying two or three level Pick Module. Multiple modules can be linked through the conveyor route to support thousands of SKU’s.
In basic order fulfillment systems, orders are either picked to carts or totes and the order moves manually between zones (Pick-Pass). Picking personnel (Pickers) typically examine paper based pick sheets to determine picking activity. Each order must be handled numerous times, creating wasted labor, pick errors, longer order processing time, and bottlenecks throughout the pick process.

Unlocking the New Powers of SAP Material Handling
05/17/2006
Until recently, many SAP software clients were duplicating efforts and costs by using standalone Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) in order to get robust warehouse functionality. Now many of these firms can “breathe new life” into their warehouse operations using a software module that integrates conveyors, pick-to-light, print and apply and other automation equipment to SAP R3’s powerful warehouse management (WM) module.
The use of secondary, standalone software systems to manage warehouse operations and material handling functions has some painful drawbacks. Not only do they require duplicate development servers, they are expensive to purchase and support. Plus, errors can result in the process of duplicating inventory data.

Numina Group’s Cube 3 provides all of the information necessary to weight, size and determine the most cost effective shipping method. Customers that have Transportation Management Systems or Shipping Manifesting Systems can easily integrate the information from Cube3 though its Open Systems software interface.
“The data helps us determine if we send an order by parcel service, commercial carrier or our own private truck fleet,” said one of Numina’s premiere heath care products distributors. “Carton dimensional and weight data is integrated with our Transportation Management System to ensure customer satisfaction and save thousands of dollars a month in shipping costs.”
Product dimensional data can not only be used for shipping cost savings but can also provide the data to optimize warehouse space, determine the best case order picking, and validates case picking by comparing the picked cases to expected weight and dimensional standards. This last feature allows companies to identify and prevent picking errors in real time prior to shipping.

AWBC places a high value on its personnel so when it decided to install new technology to automate the returns process, it did so with the goal of retaining its current employees by re-deploying them to other business operations. “Dedication to quality and strong employee work ethics is a key contributor to our success; we want to retain their knowledge and skills as we continue to expand said Sondra McCulley, Vice President, Operations for American Wholesale Book Company.
After considering 3 – 4 alternative sorter suppliers, AWBC selected the EuroSort-Numina Team for its sorter technology and The Numina Group’s RDS Software. “The Numina Group contributed to our decision by providing experience, robust software and practical strategies to integrate our existing WMS with our operation; improving and streamlining our process,” added Sondra McCulley.
AWBC visited installations at other book distributors where the Eurosort operated efficiently and sorted books without damage. “Seeing the sorter in operation proved the concept that both returns and store order fulfillment processes can all be handled with the same sorter technology,” continued Ms. McCulley. “The ROI can be achieved within 2 years.”
Installation began in July and beneficial use occurred by the end of August. “The Numina Group plans to continue working closely with Eurosort in developing solutions for entertainment, books, pharmaceuticals and other market needs,” said Dan Hanrahan, president of The Numina Group. “By partnering with Eurosort we can bring the best hardware and software technology to AWBC and other clients.”
